El Oro is one of the richest provinces of the country.
During the first half of the century, one of the
biggest mine businesses settled in Portovelo; the
northamerican Sadco. In the decade of 1950, wealth
extended it's green coat, bananas, which led Ecuador
to become the first world exporter of this fruit.
Towards the beginning of the decade of 1970, an
unexplored industry began, the cultivation of shrimp,
which along with bananas, overcame petroleum in the
generation of income for the country. Its land is
fierce and its products, cocoa, coffee, bananas are
exceptional because of their aroma and flavor.
Its capital, Machala, a lonely village with only
7549 neighbors, now with 250 thousand habitants,
soon became one of the largest growing cities in
the country.
